A Belated Thanks for RIM's Founders and Their Families

    We owe Thanks to RIM's founders and their families.

    Today, when revising the article The death of a Canadian business owner that is to recall the hardship of Jerry as an immigrant and a business owner in Canada, I think of the founders and their families of the former RIM - Research In Motion Limited .

    RIM - now BlackBerry Limited has declined.

    For such a disappointing result, naturally, there were the mistakes on its management, as the founders and main managers that Mr. Mike Lazaridis and Mr. Douglas Fregin should take main responsibility.

    As a high-tech company, RIM once was the pride of Canada, so that the fate of RIM has been shared by many Canadians.

    Just like that of there people are very happy for its success before, for its failure today, also, there people are naturally to be extremely distressed.

  For the decline of RIM, there were many articles to dig the reasons. In this process, it is inevitable with some critical voices with kind will.

  Jan 27, 2014, I once wrote an article The Fatal DNA of RIM & Canadian Enterprises to discuss some mistakes in the management of RIM.

   Now, when I review the hardship of Jerry in the business running, besides the outside objective difficulties, the inside human friendship factors are more difficult to deal with. In consideration of the friendship, some incompetent employees can not be replaced. The low quality of some executives on important management positions is fatal.

  For the decline of RIM, there were many such thorny problems that can not be solved easily, we must be objective rationally understand the difficulties.

  In view of that, when we criticizing the mistakes of Mr. Mike Lazaridis and Mr. Douglas Fregin, at first, we should share the feeling of them and their families. Since that the psychological blow for them fromRIM's decline will be much more serious than that of any of us, and thereby will harm their health physically.

  Now, we must know that any reports that mention RIM are likely to touch their irritated sensitive nerves, and to cause their pains.

  We should reflect that we must express our sympathy to RIM's founders and their families, and we should consider that what should we do for helping those business owners?

  We must be rationally aware that whether it is for the economy of Waterloo region, or the economy of Canada, the founders of RIM and their families have made great contributions.

  From the establishment to the daily operation of former RIM, they have born too much psychological pressure; we should be grateful to them, rather than to continuously give them psychological pressure. 

  People who have made great contribution should not bear the treatment that should be subjected by the people who are at fault.

  Now, I stand up at full attention to salute with my greeting to them, and say thank you very much.

Blackberry creator, Lazaridis building beautiful getaway for big minds

    Former co-CEO of RIM and Blackberry creator Mike Lazaridis is building a 26,000sq ft home along the shores of Lake Huron. The grand home will be much more than a second home, for one of Canada's top tech innovators and one of its richest entrepreneurs. It will be an exclusive retreat for the world’s leading scientific and political minds, a beautiful space where they can converse, brainstorm ideas and dream big. “My hope is that when they come here, they’ll see all the good and be inspired by it,” Mr. Lazaridis says during a tour of his project. “I want to inspire the groups to think and think big and be bold. That’s something that has worked for me for decades and I can’t see it stopping. I’m not done yet.” 

    “The thing is, I’ve always been grateful to this country because it accepted my parents,” says Lazaridis, 50, whose Greek parents moved to Canada when he was a young boy to flee Christian persecution in Turkey. “We came here with a few suitcases and very little money." Canada gave them an opportunity to rebuild their lives. "It educated me and my sister." 

    The 26,000 square foot home is rumoured to cost 100 million. Mike Lazaridis says “I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to invest in something that pushes the limits of Canadian architecture, engineering, manufacturing,” he explains. “The fact that we were able to do this all with Canadian talent is a statement to the world.” 

    It is great to see successful Canadians giving back by building and supporting local land, designers and architects. However, over the last year, RIM's future has not been as bright as the view in the picture above. The company's share price dropped by more than 75 per cent, its market share in the United States collapsed to just 9 per cent, it missed numerous profit estimates and the company delayed key products and crucial software updates. RIM was plagued by days of global network outages in 2011 which led to disappointed investors and users.

    Are you a fan of the Blackberry? Do you think they will bounce back with their new CEO Thorsten Heins stepping in as CEO and President in 2012? Or are they doomed competing against Apple's innovative iPhone and Google Android?
