TORONTO - Prepare to pony up, Toronto.

The provincial transit agency, Metrolinx, recommended Monday that residents of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area pay 1% more in HST to raise money for an ambitious $34-billion transportation plan called The Big Move.

Other recommended taxes include a five-cents-a-litre gas tax, a 15% development charge, and a business parking levy that targets off-street parking spots.

The taxes are expected to raise $2 billion annually for over 400 kilometres of new transit: $1.3 billion from the sales tax increase, $350 million from the business parking levy, $330 million from the fuel tax increase, and $100 million from development charges.
