5.2 Is softened water safe to drink?

Softened water still contains all the natural minerals that we need. It is only deprived off its calcium and magnesium contents, and some sodium is added during the softening process. That is why in most cases, softened water is perfectly safe to drink. It is advisable that softened water contains only up to 300mg/L of sodium.
In areas with very high hardness the softened water must not be used for the preparation of baby-milk, due to the high sodium contant after the softening process has been carried out.

The hardness of water in Waterloo region is about 25~30 grains per gallon, about 425~510ppm.
So the soft water has about 400~500 ppm sodium ion. In general it\'s not recommended to drink soft water, same as not to consume too much salt or you might get high blood pressure. That\'s why there is a hard water branch to back yard, garage, kitchen(optional, not every house has one) when the softener was installed. The hard water faucet in the kitchen is used for drinking, cooking and watering flowers if you don\'t have RO system.
RO system can remove 95% mineral from water. That\'s why the RO water is purified water. The mineral in water is not active and can not be absorbed by human body.
The water source for RO is normally connected to soft cold water since hard water can plug the RO membrane and reduce the life of membrane.
RO water has no hardness but its content is different from soft water. RO water removes almost all chlorine, sediment, ions, bacterias and cysts.
Soft water is good for your water tank, washer, pipes, taps, and dish washer. It\'s good for your skin, hair, but not good for your drinking or cooking.
